An Approximation Criterion for Essential Self-adjointness of Dirichlet Operators on Certain Banach Spaces

We establish an approximation criterion for essential self-adjointness of Dirichlet operators with nonconstant diffusion part on certain Banach spaces.

We develop a calculus structure in the Banach lattice introduced in a preceding paper, having in mind an approximation problem appearing in non-smooth optimization. We show that the essential results depend as much on the order structure as on the analytical one.     

Improved lower bounds on the total variation distance for the Poisson approximation

New lower bounds on the total variation distance between the distribution of a sum of independent Bernoulli random variables and the Poisson random variable (with the same mean) are derived via the Chen–Stein method. The new bounds rely on a non-trivial modification of the analysis by Barbour and Hall (1984) which surprisingly gives a significant improvement. A use of the new lower bounds is addressed.     

Inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on curves and Hausdorff dimension

The goal of this paper is to develop a coherent theory for inhomogeneous Diophantine approximation on curves in Rn akin to the well established homogeneous theory. More specifically, the measure theoretic results obtained generalize the fundamental homogeneous theorems of R.C. Baker (1978) [2], Dodson, Dickinson (2000) [18] and Beresnevich, Bernik, Kleinbock, Margulis (2002) [8]. In the case of planar curves, the complete Hausdorff dimension theory is developed.

We characterize the convex envelope of a given function f as the unique solution of a convex programming problem. It allows us to build a sequence of convex and polygonal function ^un that converges uniformly to the convex envelope of f.

The uniqueness theorem for generalized solutions of initial-boundary problems for the Marguerre—Vlasov vibrations of shallow shells with clamped boundary conditions is proved. A unique method developed by the author, based upon a nonstandard treatment of smoothing operators, is applied instead of using an enclosure theorem at the critical values of indices.
